The first review is always the hardest, HELL YEAH IT IS!
When I started this blog, I had to choose one of my favorite movies to be the first to review. To be honest, I
couldn't think of any movie to start this blog with better than Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind.
I once described this movie as " The most realistic-unrealistic movie I've ever seen ", but we'll get to that later.
First, let's start with The Plot:
Joel (Jim Carrey), a man who learns that his girlfriend, Clementine (Kate Winslet) had a procedure to erase him from her memory, decides to have the same procedure in order to forget about her. During the procedure, Joel meets her in his memories and begins to fall in love with her again.
Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind was directed by Michel Gondry. The screenplay was written by Charlie Kaufman who also wrote Being John Malkovich . They both did a remarkable job. Gondry expressed his outstanding directing style and Kaufman wrote something that no one had the ability to describe in words before. You can feel that they both knew what they were doing and that somehow both of them could relate to what's going on in it.
The Casting:
Jim Carrey was an excellent choice for Joel's role. Sometimes casting a comedian in a serious role can work pretty well like Michael Keaton in Batman. Kate Winslet nailed it as Clementine. I've never been a big fan of her, but I changed my mind after this. She was good at being this independent young lady that does what she wants even if it's crazy. Mark Ruffalo, Kirsten Dunst, Elijah Wood and Tom Wilkinson all did well too.
Now, what I think of the movie itself:
ESOTSM has some unbelievably weird/awesome cinematophraphy; there is this scene where Jim Carrey is with Kate Winslet in his memories. Elijah and Ruffalo are erasing this particualar memory. Jim is running with Kate to save her from being deleted. The wood in the fence behind them is disappearing one piece at a time as they are trying to hide. Some scenes where it was dark, they used a flashlight behind a camera. As much as this sounds amateur-ish it actually works great knowing that it's all inside Jim Carrey's head. So, this weirdness was necessary for creating a unique atmosphere for the whole movie.
The soundtracks are satisfyingly addictive; they will stick in your head long after you're done watching it as they capture the mood perfectly.
For the sake of this review I tried to think of something that I hate about the movie. Honestly, I couldn't; it just works fine as it is for me.The thing that might be a problem is that it's not for everybody; I mean many would relate to it, but they might find it a bit weird/crazy.
In Summary:
ESOTSM is a unique experience and a remarkable one indeed. Awesome soundtrack, awesome cinematography and one hell of a good movie to watch.
